If you're more of a lone wolf and prefer to play solo in your battle royale games, Apex Legends might not be for you. Respawn has revealed that the game has already logged 1 million unique players, and that it that threshold less than eight hours after launch.

That's not to say Apex Legends is a total dud - it's a free-to-play shooter with Titanfall 2's tight, responsive gunplay.

"Thank you so much for showing up and being part of this with Respawn you are incredible!"

Why it matters: Are people suffering from Battle Royale fatigue? Apex Legendswill follow a seasonal model with each themed season bringing new content to the game in the form of new weapons, new Legends, new skins and more. Here's what you need to know. Respawn unveils free-to-play battle royale game Apex Legends
'Apex Legends' is the latest free-to-play 'Fortnite' challenger, and it's available now

Despite being a Respawn game and being set in the same universe, Apex Legends is a very distinct experience from Titanfall.

As it happens, with Apex Legends, Respawn hasn't totally taken Switch plans off the table. But an Apex Legends iPhone seems conscpicuous by its absence.

In an interview with Eurogamer, Repsawn's lead producer Drew McCoy told the site that there's "nothing [they] can now talk about" with regards to mobile and Switch ports.

Apex Legends is monetised in a number of ways, for starters, a seasonal "Battle Pass" is going to be available for dedicated players who want additional rewards. Not to be throwing EA under the bus, but this wasn't the game they were expecting. Adding that the reason for the surprise announcement/release combination is to avoid speculation and simply let the game speak for itself. If they don't make it in time, they can still collect your "banner", a customisable image that represents your character.
