That's slower from a standstill but with a range equal to the Tesla's.
The Polestar 2 will start at $63,000 for the Launch Edition (the first 12 months of production) in the U.S., plus the $7,500 tax incentive, which effectively brings the price down to $55,500. Unsurprisingly, those figures are about on-par with the Model 3's.
Other unique features will include the new Pixel LED headlights (not available in the U.S. due to legislation), a proximity lighting feature that gives the owner a welcome sequence, frameless side mirrors and more.
Polestar borrows the iconic headlights from Volvo with the "Thor Hammer" design which flank the rigged glossy black and checked front grille which looks derivative of newer Volvo cars.
Gold-coloured seat belts, brake calipers, and valve caps are available with a $US5000 Performance Pack (though not recommended if you live outside Miami).
The Model 3's design is more approachable now that the car's more widely available.
The Polestar 2's extremely minimal dashboard is centered on a large tablet-size touchscreen.
Like Volvo does with the XC40, V60 and S60, Polestar plans to offer the option of having a monthly subscription to the Polestar 2, however the monthly rate still needs to be determined.
After all, Volvo is the parent company. Google Assistant will operate the car's voice control system.
Carmakers including Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz and BMW are beginning deliveries of premium electric cars unveiled over the past year as they try to muscle in on a market that Tesla has dominated so far. It will also include an Android-based infotainment system, bringing embedded Google services - such as Google Maps, Play Store and Assistant - to a vehicle for the first time. In the Polestar 2, the small sedan aims for plainer shapes and a minimalist interior-although not as stark as the Model 3's interior.
Among Tesla's gifts to the automotive universe is its direct-sales model that fundamentally changed how people consider buying cars. But if you can swing the cash and want one of the first cars EVs from the company, you can pre-order one now. That's longer than the 264 miles offered by the standard Tesla but it doesn't match the Model 3 Long Range's 310-mile rating.
China will be the biggest market, followed by Europe and North America.
"E-mobility is the right way to preserve this planet for future generations", Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath said. Initial launch markets are set to include China, the USA, Germany, Sweden and the United Kingdom, with the vehicle due to make its first public appearance at next week's Geneva show.
Volvo is also using the new Polestar brand to transition production out of Sweden, to a new facility that is being built in Chengdu, China.
