The new record is 20 million.
The picture, has been uploaded by the Instagram page "world_record_egg" has now become the most liked picture on Instagram, taking over Kylie Jenner's photograph. Jenner's image is now the second-most-liked image on Instagram with 18.3 million likes. "We got this", the caption read, along with a prayer hands emoji.
It all goes back to January 4 when the Instagram profile world_record_egg uploaded its one and only fateful post.
The announcement of the birth of Stormi Webster, Kylie Jenner's first child, posted on February 7, 2018 accrued over 18 million likes in total but was no match for an egg named Eugene.
This is a very popular egg.
It isn't clear why the egg was posted or whether there's any deeper meaning to the post.
A report by Atlantic previous year also looked into the multitude of Instagram accounts which post identical photographs every day, in an attempt to swiftly amass followers.
The egg image is the only post on the account world_record_egg, which appears to have been set up exclusively with the goal of breaking the record. The "World Record Egg's" attempt to troll Jenner - and the rest of the internet - was a success. "What a time to be alive", the egg master wrote, adding the hashtag #EggGang. Thank you all so much for your support and messages. Its only objective was to get more likes than Jenner. But for now I need to sleep.
In other words, the egg has smashed Jenner's photo with over 60% more likes at the time of this writing (and it will undoubtedly end up with much more as word continues to spread).
"Take that little egg", Jenner captioned the video, which originally was shared to see if she could cook an egg on the hot ground.
