There should be no special counsel investigation because what about Obama.

Probably. Mueller has clearly pursued allegations that Trump criminally obstructed the Russian Federation probe, mainly by firing former Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James Comey in May 2017 - the move that led directly to Mueller's appointment.

Trump's comments came as a growing sense of concern developed inside the White House over the negative reaction to Whitaker being tapped as the acting chief law enforcement official. And did his campaign have advance knowledge of illegally hacked Democratic emails? Whitaker was hired as a CNN legal commentator a year ago for several months, before leaving the role in September 2017 to head to the Justice Department as chief of staff to now-former Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

Gonzales said if a decision is made to curtail or end the Mueller probe, that shouldn't be made by the acting attorney general, but someone within the normal lines of the chain of authority, either the deputy attorney general or the solicitor general.

Whitaker publicly criticized Mueller's investigation before he was hired as Sessions' chief of staff previous year.

"I haven't even thought about it", Trump said.

Some protesters said they fear Trump is close to causing a constitutional crisis. They could also call Mueller to testify and force him to divulge details from the investigation. But the work is not done.

In an editorial for previous year, Whitaker made clear that he believes the president's personal finances are off limits to special counsel Robert Mueller. Trump, however, did not rule out speaking with Mueller if a subpoena was issued.

He has two other options: make a report on his conclusions for the House of Representatives, which has the power to impeach the president.

Demonstrations are taking place in more than 1,000 USA cities and towns on Thursday evening-beginning at 5:00 PM (local time)-in response to President Donald Trump "installing a hack" to oversee the ongoing investigation of Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

Mueller has not publicly identified any of the targets of his investigation.

It's unclear what additional charges prosecutors are pursuing and how much of it pertains to the president personally.

On Thursday, two people close to Whitaker said he has no intention of taking himself off the Russian Federation case.

Nancy, another protester who did not want to give her last name, said Trump in trying to impede the Mueller probe has done something she thinks will potentially destroy the country. In the months before, Whitaker was a familiar presence on CNN, where he questioned Mueller's scope and reach. Trump defended the ban by saying: "This is a very sacred place". Those TV appearances included one on CNN in which Whitaker suggested that the Mueller probe could be starved of resources.

"We are pleased to announce that Matthew G. Whitaker, Chief of Staff to Attorney General Jeff Sessions at the Department of Justice, will become our new Acting Attorney General of the United States", Trump tweeted. And not everyone is convinced he needs to. "You would have somebody from your campaign take the meeting to try to get the information", he said.
