Telemachus Orfanos, a Navy veteran, perished in a hail of bullets at the Borderline Bar & Grill on Wednesday night along with 10 other revellers and a sheriff who tried in vain to save those inside.

The Los Angeles-area bar, near Pepperdine University and California Lutheran University, was hosting its weekly 18-and-older College Country Night, which offered line-dancing lessons.

A mental health specialist with the crisis team who met Long said he may be suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, but chose to not detain him.

Helus, who loved fishing with his son, was hoping to retire in the next year or two after 29 years on the force. A little over one year ago, on October 1, 2017, Orfanos was at the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival when a gunman killed 58 people and wounded hundreds more.

"I hope they call me insane ..."

John was inside the bar near the front door with his stepdad. "I pushed him off me and I said, 'Stop!"

"He started to grab at me", Colell told the paper.

It was college night at the Borderline when a gunman entered and opened fire, killing 12 people and then himself. Eleven people inside the bar were killed along with a cop who was one of the first on the scene.

"This is not going to be easy for a very long time", he said. With flames bearing down, firefighters carried people from homes and put them in empty seats of their neighbors' cars, said Carol Napoli, 74. She said, "He owed me miles regularly".

"He was just a great guy, a gentle soul", Buschow said. And this maniac came in and started shooting at people.

According to survivors, Long was dressed in all-black, wearing a baseball cap, sunglasses and a mask covering the bottom part of his face. It's believed he then took his own life.

Long used an illegal extended magazine - created to hold extra bullets - in his attack on the Borderline Bar & Grill, about 40 miles west of Los Angeles.

A man who survived a mass shooting in Las Vegas a year ago was among those killed in Wednesday's attack in California, his family says.

"The issue as a country artist is you feel like if you say something wrong, your audience is going to turn on you", Bobby Bones, the syndicated country morning radio host, told The Washington Post past year.

USA media said a number of the young people who were at the bar rampage in California on Wednesday night had survived that massacre.

When CNN read the post to a friend of Long's, who did not want to be publicly identified, the friend said, "That does not sound like Ian to me at all".

He escaped death previous year when a gunman killed 58 people in Las Vegas. At the time, she was waiting to find out whether her husband's niece had escaped unharmed from the Borderline Bar and Grill - she did.
