Tonight, Canelo was handed a majority decision victory in a fight that he again did not win.

Canelo Alvarez ended Gennady Golovkin's long reign as middleweight champion, outboxing the champion and holding off a late rally to score a majority decision and win the WBA, WBC and linear middleweight titles on Saturday at T-Mobile Arena. Alvarez blamed the failed tests on contaminated meat from his native Mexico.

Golovkin, who had yearned for years for a big-time fight, had knocked out 23 consecutive opponents at one point before winning a highly competitive unanimous decision against former middleweight titlist Daniel Jacobs in March 2017 before agreeing to fight Alvarez.

However, the judges controversially ruled in Canelo's favour, handing Golovkin his first loss as a professional and giving Canelo the title of the new middleweight champion.

He said: 'I had Golovkin 117-112. "It was my plan from the beginning". At first I aimed for the knockout, I didn't. Standing in the center in round four, Golovkin connected with a solid right that caught Canelo's attention.

The 36-year-old, who needed eight stitches in a cut above his right eye, insisted he had not felt under pressure during 12 punishing rounds.

"I'm very emotional. That's what I did". I gave the fight to Canelo. He had always claimed to have been the true victor of the first fight and had now missed out on career wins 39 and 40 due to contentious scorecards.

'You can either fight as going inside and imposing your body on the other guy, or you fight on the outside and use the jab, control the range and make the smaller guy take all the chances. The two squared off on September 16, 2017, and while many fight fans believed Golovkin pulled out a narrow victory in that initial meeting, the judges weren't as sure. I feel satisfied because I gave a great fight. The two have now fought 24 rounds, and many of them were decided by the narrowest of margins. Every great fighter has a great rival. "Hopefully there'll be a third fight".

And asked on whether or not there will be a rematch, he said: "If the people want another fight then we'll do it again". We had good judges who saw it from different angles. Maybe the next time they'll see it in our favor.
