Anthony Martial has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford, while Harry Maguire, Miralem Pjanic and Ivan Perisic are among United's reported targets.

When the question about his squad and challenging next season was put to him on Tuesday at a press conference in Los Angeles, Mourinho replied: "I don't answer to your question".

"Last season I didn't play much, that's my objective and my ambition".

When asked why Darmian was skipper for the match, which United won 9-8 on penalties after a 1-1 draw, Mourinho said: "Because he is a fantastic guy in my two years and with Mr. [Louis] Van Gaal before me".

"Of course people can say I'm fat, but I know my own body", Shaw told British media. "Another thing is what is going to happen".

United have so far signed three players this summer, including third choice keeper Lee Grant.

But Mourinho is happy to let Martial leave rather than hold on to an unsettled player who has struggled to adapt to his methods over the past two seasons.

And the Leicester City centre-back's performances have not gone unnoticed as Manchester United are preparing a huge swoop for the England worldwide. I'm young, I'm 23 and still have a long career, and I want to play games.

United open their Premier League campaign at Old Trafford against Leicester City on August 10, before travelling to Brighton on August 19 for their second fixture.

"I don't think the injury of Antonio is a big injury".

Players who reached the World Cup semi-finals and final are not competing in the International Champions Cup because they get a mandatory vacation.

"It was probably because we played against my old team. We will have to fight for the points with the players we have available". He was a phenomenal player- that does not mean we all have to be phenomenal.

Mourinho's comments to ESPN on Tuesday also included thoughts on Paul Pogba.

And Mourinho admitted he would not stand in Darmian's way if the right offer came in for him. The centre-back has come off a strong display for England at the recent World Cup in Russian Federation and this has made him the leading defensive target for United before next month's deadline.

Mourinho believes the closed nature of the World Cup was the ideal environment in which Pogba could flourish, with few outside influences to distract him from football.
