"It was an honour to meet with Senator McCain on several occasions over recent years".

McCain, a giant of the Senate, died Saturday afternoon following a battle with an aggressive form of brain cancer.

McCain spent the a year ago undergoing cancer treatment, but his family said Friday that he would discontinue that treatment.

Mr McCain died on Saturday surrounded by his family, according to a short statement released by his office.

John Kerry, a former secretary of state and senator, who like McCain served in the war, said McCain "was an American original - guts, grit, and ultimately grace personified".

The Obamas shared their own lengthy message on Twitter too, praising his courage in both politics and the war, before sending their best wishes to Cindy and the rest of the senator's family. The senator repeatedly made clear that he saw Trump and his America First ideology as a departure from the values and traditions of global leadership that he saw epitomized in the United States.

"Sen McCain, thank you for your service", read a sign near the driveway of his home in a rural part of Sedona, Arizona, television footage showed, as a police escort accompanied the hearse that was to carry his body and local residents came bearing flowers for the late political titan. Never faltering, he went on to become the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Armed Services in 2015.
