Meghan and Williams first met in 2014, at a charity football match.

Meghan last watched her friend in 2016, and may have sat on the same court as her future sister-in-law, as Catherine and William also attended that year.

This year F1 ace Lewis Hamilton, golfer Tiger Woods and Dame Anna Wintour offered their support from behind her team.

But success did not come quickly.

She has rebounded nicely from a disappointing 2017, also reaching the semi-finals at the Australian Open and the quarters at the French Open.

Until then, her experience of the Slams had not got beyond the first week.

"I was really happy to get this far", Williams said in her postgame interview, her voice wobbly with tears.

On Saturday, she knew she had to bring her A-game to see off Williams. "Kerber has been in good form in this tournament and needs to just stay calm and train her mind to face the pressure of a final against Serena", Becker wrote.

In her fourth tournament back, she has looked fit and focused with a fierce desire to win the title for her daughter, gaining momentum with every match and dropping only one set.

Winning Wimbledon with Olympia at the tournament with her was supposed to be the crowning glory of her return to the top.

But she's at pains to point out she's never wanted to model herself on the German superstar.

Only 10 months ago. "I'm really, really sure".

Williams came out swinging but was easily overpowered by Kerber in back-to-back sets.

It was Williams' 10th final at the All England Club.

Williams held to force Kerber to serve it out but the 30-year-old refused to yield.

Meghan and Kate have attended a number of engagements together this year but the final will be the first time that they're hanging out on their own together. With her excellent footwork, the German comfortably dictated from the middle of the back of the court and moved Williams about from left to right.
