His wife Amal, a human rights lawyer, rushed to Clooney's side in hospital, according to local newspaper La Nuova Sardegna, who reported he was later discharged and advised to follow a course of physiotherapy. Clooney was lucky that another incoming vehicle, a pickup truck, didn't run him over, as he fell right in front of it on the road.

Wife Amal, 40, came to collect him and the couple left in a chauffeur-driven vehicle.

Clooney already been released, since none of his injuries were life-threatening.

Clooney's rep has since told ET: "George was treated and released from an Olbia hospital".

Pictures of the crash site showed the Mercedes with a smashed windscreen and with the bike lying on the ground as the star was treated for his injuries.

NBC News reporter Claudio Lavagna tweeted: "George Clooney has already been discharged following collision between the scooter he was traveling on and a vehicle".

Reports from Italian broadcaster TGR, suggest the 57-year-old Sonning resident was taken to hospital after the crash.

Clooney owns a home on the Italian mainland, on Lake Como.

The actor is now on the island filming a new TV series "Catch-22", based on the 1961 book of the same name written by Joseph Heller.

Clooney suffered a bruised knee and will make a full recovery in 20 days, according to reports. If Clooney would have been seriously injured, the driver would have become public enemy number one. Fortunately, back in April, George Clooney stepped down from the lead role in the series, which Kyle Chandler took over.
