Amazon's Shopping App (available for Android and iOS) is the most direct way to keep an eye out for discounts on items on your wishlist.

Starting on July 16 at 3 p.m., Amazon Prime members can score Black Friday-like markdowns on hundreds of products.

Be sure to comparison shop at Target and Best Buy to see if they are price-matching, or maybe even offering gift cards to sweeten their deals and stay competitive. If you go back two years ago, Amazon offered more than 100,000 deals on Prime Day.

There will be thousands and thousands of offers over the 36 hours so it is best just to head over to Amazon and start browsing. Almost all shoppers do some pre-purchase research, bouncing around deal sites and social media.

Prime Day is a massive sale Amazon puts on each year in July for Prime members.

And also new this year is a section on Whole Foods, where Prime members will save 10% if they spend $35. Or Macy's, where prices on men's suits and sport coats are up to 75 per cent lower through Sunday.

"If you're looking for expensive electronics like a TV, you're likely better off waiting until Black Friday or Cyber Monday if you can", according to Slate.

There are a number of deal-hunting websites online, all of which will be on full alert for Prime Day bargains.

Prime Day, created by Amazon in 2015 for its 20th anniversary, has inspired other companies like Wayfair to invent their own shopping holidays.

Additionally, Prime members who live near a Whole Foods may want to take advantage of a new offer this year, Dengler said. We've been preparing for weeks leading up to this day. One Click Retail estimates that Amazon sells about $1 million per minute during peak time on Prime Day, based on last year's data. Many took to social media to complain that they couldn't order items. Like nearly everything the company does, the shopping holiday gives customers another reason to sign up for Amazon Prime. "Being top of mind in e-commerce is important because it pays off year-round, not just on one day".
