Digital objects created with the new format, called USDZ, will work in Apple's Safari browser, Messages and Mail apps, meaning AR isn't limited to stand-alone apps that people choose to download separately. Apple chief executive Tim Cook meanwhile told developers the "app ecosystem" developed by the iPhone maker will soon have delivered more than $100 billion to partners.

Breaking from its high country nomenclature, Apple has titled its new operating system macOS Mojave, and it aims to merge popular iOS features with the Mac ecosystem, clean up the desktop view, and improve security protections. Users can join using video or audio-only on their Mac or an iOS device. Parents will also be able to limit app time from another device and lock access based on age appropriate content.

The moves come as Apple has been under fire from some technologists and investors over concerns that the company's devices may be fuelling addiction and mental-health issues, particularly among children and teens.

Apple typically reserves this five-day conference, known as WWDC (for Worldwide Developers Conference), as its moment to show off new software features and operating system updates. Apple has said it wanted to make sure the features worked well for users before releasing them.

The tech firm revealed iOS 12 at WWDC, its annual gathering for the developers who build apps and other software.

There weren't any major updates to Siri, but Apple is deepening its integration with third-party apps, thanks to a new feature called Siri Shortcuts, which lets you set app-specific shortcuts to use with the assistant.

New MacOS Mojave and iOS 12 software to be released later this year will also make it harder to use trackers to create "unique fingerprints" by gleaning data about devices being used, according to Federighi.

Apple also showcased a new system that makes it more hard to gather information about users as they browse across the web. There are also major changes to Do Not Disturb, parental controls and CarPlay. The initiative includes reminders to take a break from services like YouTube, tools to help Android users monitor the time they spend inside various apps, and a "wind down" feature that pings you to go to bed at a preset time while reducing blue light and gradually fading your screen to black and white.

Apple is taking a swipe at ubiquitous "share" buttons created by Facebook and others to track users' behavior online regardless of whether they click on them.
