One of those experiences will allow users to play the same AR game together while looking at the same landscape while on separate devices, a feature that we had heard about ahead of WWDC. iOS 12 is getting some meaningful updates that will help you be more productive and potentially less distracted by your device.
iPhone: The star of the show will be iOS 12. "With Screen Time, these new tools are empowering users who want help managing their device time, and balancing the many things that are important to them". You can now send notifications from the lock screen to the notification center, with Siri now recommending you to disable notifications from apps that you don't use.
To monitor and control children's screen time, parents will need to connect their device to their child's device using Family Sharing, an Apple service that allows parents to monitor and control their kids' phone habits.
You can now set an ending time for do not disturb - for 1 hour, until a certain period, or when you leave a location or meeting.
Earlier this year, a handful of outlets reported that Apple would delay some big iOS 12 features to focus on quality and performance. A new Do Not Disturb during Bedtime mode will dim you iPhone's display and hide all alerts until the morning. The Mac App Store features a new look and editorial content to help users easily find new applications.
Any app can now expose quick actions to Siri. For example, you can build a shortcut that'll bring up your Kayak travel plans when you say "Travel plans" to Siri.
An activity report will now let you see how much you use of an app each day.
While no new major gadgets will be previewed or launched at this week's five-day conference, that doesn't mean Apple is falling behind when it comes to new products.
The new macOS, along with iOS 12, will roll out this fall, and a beta edition for developers is coming this week as part of WWDC. Users can select skin color, freckles, hairstyle, head shape, eye wear and more. These tools will become available to developers sometime in 2019, though Apple already used internal versions of these tools to bring iOS apps like Apple News and Stocks to macOS Mojave.
Apple also rolled out group video chat sessions with up to 32 users, putting it in direct competition with companies such as Cisco Systems Inc and Microsoft Corp's Skype.
"Here Apple is allowing users to see when tracking is enabled on a website - actually being able to visually see that with a prompt is breaking new ground".
And that underscores a paradox: Apple is introducing features to limit iPhone use at the same time it is encouraging more use by building in more useful features. Plus, you'll be able to spice things up with Animoji and Memoji during these FaceTime conversations. Adobe will also be participating, supporting Lightroom Creative Cloud in the store. Depending on the software integrations available and just how many smart, IoT devices you have, you could tell Siri, "it's party time", and she could turn the AC on, close the blinds, change the lighting, and text your friends, "come over and boogie".
