U.S. Sen. Dean Heller cruised through a five-way Republican primary race Tuesday, freeing him to prepare for a tough re-election battle that could help swing control of the Senate.

Election turnout is generally low in primary contests.

After days of heavy rains in the mid-Atlantic, sunny weather greeted voters on Tuesday.

The incumbent most in danger of losing renomination on Tuesday is South Carolina Rep. Mark Sanford, because of his vocal criticism of the president. With over half the vote in, Sanford is trailing his challenger, state Rep. Katie Arrington, by about seven points. These victories mean that the state's Democratic party has nominated six women to fill 11 House seats, all but one of which are now occupied by men. Corey Stewart, a combative conservative who almost upset Ed Gillespie for the party's gubernatorial nomination past year, was competing with state House of Delegates member Nick Freitas and pastor E.W. Jackson.

Political analysts say the primaries and midterm election in November are expected to reflect how voters think President Trump is doing.

"From the beginning of this campaign I have said that I felt called to continue the public service that I began in the Navy by running to be a representative who will always put our community and our country first", Luria said in a statement.

"Corey Stewart has run before and he didn't impress me", said Gordon, referring to Stewart's bid for the GOP gubernatorial nomination a year ago.

"Oh, I voted for McMaster just because he's the closest associated with Trump, you know", McMaster supporter Neil Bonocan said.

Voters must bring a photo ID to the polls.

GOP Rep. Bruce Poliquin, who represents Maine's 2nd Congressional District, is watching which Democrat will come out of the primary Tuesday. The victor will likely face Republican Rep. Barbara Comstock - considered one of the most vulnerable incumbents in Congress - in one of the most closely watched races in the country. In the Senate, all six were among Democrats. ME on Tuesday debuted its statewide ranked-choice voting, which allows voters to rank candidates first to last on their ballot.

The district includes Virginia Beach, the state's largest city, and the world's largest Navy base in Norfolk.

So far, the party has staved off a Democratic version of the 2010 tea party rise, when GOP leaders, even as they marched in lockstep opposition to then-President Barack Obama, watched more conservative outsiders defeat incumbent Republicans and fundamentally reshape the party's identity on Capitol Hill. On the Democratic side, state Rep. James Smith - endorsed by Joe Biden - is seen as the one Democrat who can pull off the upset in deep red SC, should a "blue wave" extend that far south. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., mocked his colleagues for being afraid to "poke the bear" and cross the president by voting on an amendment to grant Congress more authority over tariffs. The Democratic candidates have a challenge getting voters to remember their names. Proper forms of IDs are a SC driver's license, DMV identification card, a voter registration card with a photo, federal military ID or a United States passport.

"It's very consistent with what we've been seeing the field, and what we've been hearing as we've been out talking with voters in the district", Wexton said. Open races in Nevada's 3rd and 4th Congressional Districts have made for competitive primaries in both parties. Virginia doesn't allow same-day registration.
