Women's Golf In Third After First Day of NCAA Regional

The No. 7 University of South Carolina Aiken golf team is in 14th place after the first day of play at the NCAA South/Southeast Regional.

- Senior Alana Uriell led a record-breaking Day 2 surge for the No. 3 Arkansas Razorbacks women's golf team, which rocketed past host Texas to take an 11-shot lead into Wednesday's final round of the NCAA Austin Regional.

The Hokies, in their third year of existence as a golf team, are coached by Carol Green Robertson, a Tazewell native. Florida is in third place at 2-over, and Baylor, Virginia Tech, Oklahoma and Texas A&M are all tied at 5-over. With one more round to go, Huang is tied for fifth at three-under par, while Dalton is tied for eighth at two-under. The top six teams make it to the national championships in Stillwater, Oklahoma at Karsten Creek.

"Yamamoto benefited from a pair of birdies over her final nine holes, the first of which came at the par-3 2nd where she landed her tee shot just a foot from the pin".

Freshman Gurleen Kaur shot 1-under 71 and finished tied for 12 place at 3-under 216, while senior Amy Lee also carded a 1-under 71 to tie for 24 place at 3-over 219.

Junior Emma Groom is tied for 76th with an 18-hole 6-over par 78, while freshman Taylor McCorkle is tied for 81st at 7-over par 79.

That was enough for Curtis to earn an individual qualifying spot for the NCAA Championship even though the Badgers didn't finish in a top-six spot as a team. Leads disappear quickly in college golf, but the real fight in the final round could be for the sixth and final advancing spot.

The NCAA Championship field included 72 teams. "They did not get flustered when they made a few bogeys and they made some good birdies and an eagle coming in".

SHORT SHOTS: Top seed Alabama fired its lowest regional round in school history, a 15-under 273, to post its best 54-hole regional score in program history, a 33-under 831, and win by eight shots.

Moberly got off to a scorching start to round two.

"My second shot was bad", Voelker said.

Sharp started her round by birdying three of the first five holes.
