A lot depends on whether Simpson continues to build his five-stroke lead or stays within striking distance of the field.
Webb Simpson leads the tournament at 19-under par heading into the final round. He has two victories and six finishes outside the top 20. "I don't know what to say".
It was no surprise that Simpson, a student of history, had no interest in premature celebrations.
However, Woods was unable to maintain the hot streak and a poor tee shot brought a first bogey of the day at the 14th.
Jason Day, among those at 9-under 207, had a four-shot lead when he won The Players two years ago. "But I can assure you, for me it was goosebumps and shivers out there hearing all the noise and playing with him".
Another opportunity passed at the par-5 16th, where Woods had just 225 yards to the pin but was between clubs and ended up hooking a 4-iron short in a bunker.
"I just felt more comfortable with it and consequently today I was able to shape the golf ball both ways and started to control it a little bit better today".
For Woods, there's nothing but positives to take away from his third round at TPC Sawgrass.
To climb the leaderboard again Sunday, Woods still will have to contend with plenty of firepower.
Woods also set a career best for this course.
It was one of the few things Woods got wrong on Saturday.
But Woods even threatened to beat the course record of 63 at one stage of his round.
Woods only beat the cut by one shot on Friday evening after posting a second-round 71, but was back to his best the following morning as he rose from tied 68th into a share of eighth place. Woods didn't do anything spectacularly wrong the rest of the way, he just didn't convert and dropped his lone shot on the 14th with a drive into thick rough that kept him from reaching the green.
The pair were in a group of seven players on eight under, including English pair Ian Poulter and Tommy Fleetwood.
"When I was chasing Henrik [Stenson, 2009] down, Henrik played incredible golf in tough conditions". This golf course identifies your faults really quickly, so the last two days it has just been really solid, driving the ball well. But I'm trying not to dwell there. He had the putter going on the front nine, shooting a sparkling 30 at the turn.
Woods, who started the day on the cut line tied with 12 others for 68th at 1-under, came out red-hot at TPC Sawgrass on Saturday, notching six birdies with no bogeys on the front nine and finishing with a round of 7-under 65 to move to 8-under 208 for the tournament.
Lee said he was not going to be looking at what Simpson was doing on Sunday.
