Carriers will collect donations as they deliver mail.
Last year's food drive resulted in over 71 million pounds of food collected by Postal Service carriers nationally, feeding an estimated 30 million people. "We wouldn't be able to help our neighbors living with hunger without your help".
Stamp Out Hunger is the largest single-day food drive in the United States and is held on the second Saturday in May.
"As letter carriers we look forward to being about to help make it easy for the customers to donate by delivering the food to the food bank", Peterson said. Plastic bags to fill with donations will be provided again this year by the post office.
To participate, you just take your non-perishable goods to your mailbox and your mail carrier will do the rest.
While 37,000 pounds is a lot of food to go around, Drake said that number is lower than what they used to collect. Within the local network, more than 26,500 pounds of food was collected previous year. Those making donations are asked to avoid placing items in glass containers. Food trucks and jumpers will be available.
Here at home, thousands have been fed with the food from Stamp Out Hunger.
LA Cares Secretary Linda Burns emphasized this food drive and its donations are invaluable. Letter carriers hope to top that number this year, and they urge local residents to help. "Every year, I love doing it", she said.
