No party in Karnataka has won a second successive term in office since 1985 when the Janata Dal under Ramakrishna Hegde had retained power.

The high-voltage, high-pitched and at times bitter and personal campaign for the May 12 Karnataka Assembly elections - which, billed as the quarterfinals for the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, holds huge stakes for both the Bharatiya Janata Party and Congress - ended May 10 evening amidst predictions of a close fight and a hung Assembly. Rahul Gandhi has been accepted as president by the Congress party. In fact, it was eight months ago that he had said during a question-answer session with students at University of California at Berkley, that he was ready to be Congress' prime ministerial face in the next big electoral battle. He will say this because there are no other issues. "However, it is too early to express such an ambition", said Athawale.

Rahul Gandhi on Thursday said Narendra Modi's comments on his mother's Italian origins showed "the quality of the Prime Minister", effortlessly drawing a distinction between his dignified response and the tasteless trigger. I attract that anger because he sees a threat in me.

As he prepared to board a special flight for Badami, Yeddyurappa said one of his first decisions as chief minister would be to "reopen all the complaints of corruption filed against Siddaramaiah and other Congress leaders rejected by the anti-corruption bureau (ACB)". To nurse any hopes of returning to power in the centre, it will have to keep all its present allies intact and win even more. "PM Modi has started remembering coalition dharma, we are happy about it".

He had also mocked Rahul's assertions about the possibility of his becoming Prime Minister, wondering whether the country would accept such an "immature and naamdar (dynast)" person in the post. Mr Gandhi has also been vocal about the Modi government's failure to deliver on its election promises, including the creation of 20 million jobs every year.

Mrs Gandhi also addressed a rally in the Lingayat stronghold of Vijayapura where she said, "Modi is possessed by the devil of "Congress mukt Bharat" (bhoot lag gaya hai)". "He is engaging Modi like nobody else has".

"The video that has surfaced today show how Sriramulu and middlemen Captain Reddy, Balan, Swamiji Rajnish and CJI Balakrishnan's son-in-law Sreenijan discuss bribe deals in order to get a favourable judgment from the SC in the Obalipuram case", Karnataka Congress working president Dinesh Gundu Rao told news agency ANI.

"Modi has anger inside him and he has got anger for everybody, not only for me".

"This kind of hatred can not be the basis of campaigning as it is subject matter of illegal and corrupt practices under the Representation of People's Act", the former minister said.

"It's a new debate he has thrown up".
