Since the USA and its allies attacked Syria Friday in response to alleged chemical weapons attacks on its own people, there has been a significant surge in Russian trolls promoting fake news, the Pentagon announced Saturday.
The Syrian envoy said the airstrikes were aimed at preventing the OPCW investigation of the alleged incident in Douma and rhetorically asked why the three Western powers did not provide any evidence to the OPCW ahead of their attack on Syria.
The Pentagon is backing US President Donald Trump's assertion that the missile strikes on Syria were "Mission Accomplished!' Trump used the haunting political phrase "Mission Accomplished!' in a tweet to praise the "perfectly executed strike" against Syria".
The strikes targeted the scientific research facility in the Damascus area, as well as a chemical weapons storage facility west of the city of Homs and a third location in the same area, the US military said.
Trump said the main goal of the attacks was to establish "a strong deterrent" against chemical weapons use, which he said killed more than 1 million people during World War I a century ago before it was banned worldwide.
"Moreover, the air defenses in Syria destroyed most of the missiles". "We can not tolerate the normalization of the use of chemical weapons". It's decisive and deliberate action against the Assad regime's use of chemical weapons that killed innocent Syrian civilians, including defenseless children.
The other is the USA wants to undermine Russia's influence in Syria as it always attempts to foment troubles in areas where Russian Federation is enjoying influence.
"When our president draws a red line, our president enforces the red line".
One of Mr Assad's key allies is Iran, which needs Syria to move its weapons and proxy militias across the Middle East.
She insisted the action against Bashar Assad's regime was a limited and targeted strike to degrade and deter the Syrian government and was not about regime change.
"This is not about intervening in a civil war".
Chief Pentagon spokeswoman Dana White said Saturday that 'there has been a 2,000 percent increase in Russian trolls in the past 24 hours.
America's defence secretary, Jim Mattis, who urged caution in the lead-up to the attack, said: "We were not out to expand this; we were very precise and proportionate".
White said that Assad's use of chemical weapons on his own people demanded an immediate response, and the precision strikes against the Assad regime targeted sites associated with the chemical weapons program.
