Man City crowned Premier League champions after rivals United lose

Manchester City are Premier League champions after Jay Rodriguez secured rock-bottom West Brom a win at Manchester United that was as remarkable as it had looked unlikely.

Of course they could have wrapped up the title last weekend when they faced their rivals in the Manchester derby at the Etihad and at 2-0 up in the first half they really should have done so, to rub salt in the Red Devils' wounds.

League leaders Manchester City, who beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 on Saturday, raised their points to 87 in standings.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho said his players were "masters in complication" after their defeat by bottom side West Brom at Old Trafford.

A draw in that game would effectively confirm City as champions as well - it would leave United 15 points behind with five games remaining, while Guardiola's side also boast a far superior goal difference.

Man Utd: de Gea, Valencia, Lindelof, Smalling, Young (Rashford), Ander Herrera (Lingard), Matic, Pogba (Martial), Mata, Lukaku, Sanchez.

"This is not a dynasty, it is one title we've won". Winning titles in every league is important, with Barcelona was special.

"Ultimately, after much deliberation we were left in the position where the case distilled to the evidence of each player", ruled the commission.

But, in the end, how successful of a season has this been for City?

Rodriguez was accused of using "abusive and/or insulting words which included a reference to ethnic origin and/or colour and/or race" towards Brighton and Hove Albion defender Gaëtan Bong during a Premier League clash in January. If the reverse fixture is anything to go by though, they might run their hosts close on Sunday, with Manchester United only enjoying a narrow 2-1 win in December.

West Brom, to their credit, also kept probing forward but they lacked the class required to really open United up at the back.

West Brom caretaker boss Darren Moore: "We played against a really formidable team today, asked a lot of questions, but everyone worked hard and did their jobs".

Fortunately, Lukaku has now recovered in time to be ready for the West Brom game on Sunday.

Guardiola's side have only dropped points against Burnley and United since the New Year, while marching into an explosive Champions League quarter-final with Liverpool that saw them knocked out earlier this month.
