One sister is rusty, just beginning a comeback after having a baby. Their backs were to each other.

Venus Williams got the better of her younger sister Serena to make it through to the fourth round at Indian Wells with a 6-3, 6-4 win, ending Serena's comeback.

"This will be the 29th time the sisters have played each other in a Women's Tennis Association match and first since the final of last year's Australian Open, when Serena Williams was a 6-4, 6-4 victor". "She was suffering a lot", he said.

Because she came into this tournament unseeded, it was inevitable she would play a top player early, and that it would be the first true measure of where her game stands right now.

"For me, it was a good match".

It marked the first time Venus had beaten Serena in straight sets since the 2008 Wimbledon final. She emphatically closed out the 36-minute set with back-to-back aces that clocked 108 miles per hour and 120 miles per hour.

"The base of her game is there, which is very good news", he said.

"I've broken down I don't know how many times".

Despite the pair being great friends - in fact, Serena is even rumoured to be one of Meghan's bridesmaids - Meghan was reportedly tied up with filming commitments so was unable to attend her pal's nuptials.

She got her first match point on an error from her opponent but Serena saved it with a backhand passing shot. Beyoncé has Ivy Park, Rihanna has Fenty Beauty and a non-profit organization, and now, Serena Williams may be launching a new cosmetics line.

What followed was another epic game as the score swung backwards and forwards before Serena held a break point only to be denied by a Venus ace.

Venus is now ranked eighth in the world while Serena will get a ranking at the beginning of April.

Serena, who lifted her 23rd Grand Slam title in Melbourne past year, was then already pregnant with daughter Alexis Olympia, who was born in September. The last time they met, in the 2017 Australian Open final, the two shared a secret known to few: Serena was already expecting little Alexis Olympia. "I don't want to go backward".

This was the 29th meeting in a sibling rivalry that Serena still leads 17-12. I think that's going to be a huge story, maybe the story of the year. "It's just afterwards I don't like it as much".

Serena said she is trying not to look too far into the season. "My room for improvement is incredible", added Serena.

Since that unpleasant time, both of the Williams sisters have been well received by the fans in California. The 36-year-old athlete-turned-fashion-designer is reportedly launching a cosmetics company, and to say that we're excited is a serious understatement. Venus is seeded eighth.

There were no hecklers on this clear and cool Monday night, just the usual shouts of "Go, Venus" or "Go, Serena" or, for those feeling ambivalent, "Go Venus and Serena".

The Indian Wells match was 17 years in the making. This is general practice: the players share a cart, studiously avoiding each other, sometimes buried deep in their Beats headphones.

Danielle Collins also won her third round match, defeating Sofya Zhuk of Russian Federation 6-4, 6-4.

Richard Williams said he heard racial slurs from the crowd and he paused to shake his fist at them. "Came out and crushed it", Federer told the media after dismissing 25th-seeded Filip Krajinovic to reach the Indian Wells round of 16.

Serena and Venus also have three half-brothers and three more half-sisters from her father's first marriage.
