That remark came after Toomey had walked Trump through the details of the bill that he and Democratic West Virginia Sen.
President Trump held a meeting with lawmakers to discuss school and community safety.
After Wednesday's meeting, Toomey and Manchin said in a joint statement that the meeting was "very encouraging", and that "per the president's instruction, Congress shouldn't wait" on sending Trump gun legislation.
That prompted a stunning rebuke from Sen. Proponents of a similar ban today say that it was effective and that a new one could lower the number of mass shootings. "We have the Second Amendment and due process of law for a reason". They haven't given me a dime since 2010.
The concealed carry measure is the gun lobby's top legislative priority.
Murphy disputed Trump's optimism, telling the president, "I think you underestimate the power of the gun lobby".
"Conceptually, he still supports raising the age to 21, but he also knows there's not a lot of broad support for that, but that's something that he would support", Sanders said.
He suggested raising the age to 21 for anyone seeking to buy a semiautomatic weapon, something the NRA - and in truth most Republican legislators - have steadfastly opposed. Ted Deutch and David Cicilline introduced a ban on assault weapons in response to the Parkland shooting. "If he continues to bow to his right wing ringmasters, we will get nothing done on guns and his presidency will continue to fail".
It wasn't that long ago he was sitting amid another group of legislators indicating he was ready to sign any deal put in front of him that would address the equally contentious DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) immigration question.
The lawmakers in attendance were both flummoxed and pleased by Mr. Trump's unpredictability.
He later added that "Amy and Dianne" would not go for that - referring to Democratic Sens.
"It's time", Trump said. "But we're continuing to closely watch that", Sanders said on FOX News.
Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, told Trump that many people may with mental illnesses "are not a danger", and should not be discriminated against.
"Some of you people are petrified of the NRA".
Texas Sen. John Cornyn, the No. 2 Republican in the Senate, said Trump hosted "an incredible meeting" about how to respond to the deadly Florida shooting, but his legislation to strengthen the federal background check system was "our best and only option to act in response". "He wants to see what that legislation, the final piece of it looks like". All federally licensed firearms dealers have to undergo the checks, but private sales are exempted.
In 2013, just months after the Sandy Hook massacre, a version of the legislation was proposed by Toomey and Manchin. Five Democrats and 41 Republicans opposed it. "The only hope of passing this, given that Democrats are so strongly for these proposals, is the president persuading Republicans and frankly giving them cover from the NRA".
"They are law-abiding citizens", Toomey said. GOP leaders are not eager to let the bill eat up Senate floor time unless it can pass and are saying it is unlikely that the measure will come to a vote anytime soon without a clearer path to passage. They're working on it right now, the lawyers, ' he added.
