Wednesday's national walkout - planned to last for 17 minutes - was organized in the days after the deadly rampage carried out by former Stoneman Douglas student Nikolas Cruz, 19, who police said used a semiautomatic AR-15 rifle.

Miami-Dade County Public Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho issued a stern warning to students taking part in the movement.

Jill Barker, principal at Pisgah High School, has told students that anything that goes on "needs to be organic and from them". The email also included vague and ominous threats of punishment if students proceed to walk at the previously scheduled time, which could range anywhere from suspension to detention.

"Students in Springfield and in many urban communities across the country don't agree with current calls for metal detectors and arming teachers", he added.

St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter joined with young people at Harding High School after they walked out to demonstrate.

Students can host sign-making get-togethers for the walk-out. Multiple lanes of westbound East Washington Avenue will need to be closed.

"When you're sitting on the couch and you see this kind of stuff happen in other states, it's like well there's nothing we could do about it, but when it's so close to us, it's hard for us to sit here and think it'll never happen to us, because they were thinking the same thing", Byrd said. In Massachusetts and Georgia and OH, students said they'll head to the statehouse to lobby for new gun regulations.

Several school districts have released statements ahead of Wednesday's walkout.

All around the US today, students are planning to walk out of class to protest gun violence. More than 2,500 walkouts are planned nationwide. But administrators have not kept tabs on students' plans, according to spokesman Brian Bassett.

At 10:00 Wednesday morning, students at numerous schools across the US, including right here in western MA, walked out of their buildings. No student will be permitted to leave campus without being properly checked out by a parent.

It also includes funding for an optional program to allow some school personnel - like librarians and coaches, but not teachers - to carry firearms on campus. The American Civil Liberties Union issued advice for students who walk out, saying schools can't legally punish them more harshly because of the political nature of their message.

At least 3,000 schools have organized rallies, protests or other memorials to the Parkland victims.

Wednesday's national walkout, organized by Women's March Youth Empower, has almost 3,000 schools participating. "We're going to make sure that politicians understand we're not going to forget about this".

"The early college kids didn't want to miss class and asked if they can put up posters. We will discipline no matter if it is one, fifty, or five hundred students involved", Rhodes warned.
