This optimistic circularity is certainly contemporary, but in an age in which adults are continually amazed by children's grasp of technology, it would have made a lot more sense to let Meg harness her father's science instead of her own personality flaws. Meg is a kid who is in huge pain and this is as much a coming-of-age parable as it is a science fiction adventure, perhaps more so. It is the only entertainment I found in the film's just under two-hour length. Sometimes it's about loving yourself in that same way.
