According to the Associated Press, State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said Pence was ready to take the opportunity and the US regrets North Korea's failure to seize the chance.

Kim Yong Chol, the head of the North's delegation for the closing ceremony, is vice chairman of the ruling party's central committee.

Meanwhile, people viewing the games get glimpses of people whose lives could be in grave danger if tensions with North Korea escalate into a second Korean War.

Vice President Mike Pence attended the opening of the Olympics. "So the maximum pressure campaign is going to continue and intensify".

The vice president's office said the North Koreans expressed their dissatisfaction with Pence's announcement of new sanctions as well as his meeting with North Korean defectors when canceling the meeting.

But a senior administration official ruled out any possible meeting between Ms Trump and officials from North Korea.

Pence went on to explain that "the United States government has sanctioned" Kim Yo Jong due to "her role in abetting North Korea's horrendous human rights abuses and crimes against humanity".

Ivanka Trump is scheduled to meet South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Friday, another salvo in that diplomatic back-and-forth.
