Five of the deaths were in the past week. Most people recover from symptoms within a week without requiring medical attention but influenza can cause severe illness or death in people at high risk.
Twenty-eight more Pennsylvanians died as a result of influenza or complications of the flu in the past week, according to the state's department of health.
The latest figures show 2,889 cases of hospitalisation due to influenza and have been reported to the HSE's Health Protection Surveillance Centre this winter.

"It looks like we've reached the peak of the season", said Dr. John Morrow, Pitt County Health Department director. Expert say the best way to prevent the flu is by getting vaccinated each year.
AHS influenza immunization clinics, most pharmacies, and physician offices will be providing the flu shot for no cost to all Albertans six months of age or older until the end of March.
The CDC advises people to wash their hands frequently, avoid people who are sick, and cover coughs or sneezes in order to minimize chances of being infected.
The flu shot's overall effectiveness against all strains was pegged at 36 percent, the CDC said. "You are also protecting the people you love".
