Jones said he is hopeful that he comes to the Senate with a "little bit of a voice" because of the attention on the Alabama race. In an interview with The Post in the fall, Jones identified several senators who he said are models for the kind of consensus-driven governance he touted on the campaign trail: Kaine, Patty Murray (D-Wash.), Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) and John McCain (R-Ariz.).

"Thanks to hundreds of thousands of fair-minded Alabamians who rejected the politics of hate and fear, we have one more vote for equality and justice in the U.S. Senate today", said HRC President Chad Griffin.

Jones has acknowledged his precarious political position in representing a Republican state, but was optimistic about his chances when running for a full Senate term in 2020.

Jones, who is scheduled to be sworn in Wednesday, named Dana Gresham, a former assistant secretary for governmental affairs at the Department of Transportation, as his chief of staff. Gresham, a Birmingham native, also served as chief of staff for former Rep. Artur Davis, D-Ala.

Per tradition, the current vice president, Mike Pence, participated in ceremonies for Alabama's Doug Jones and Minnesota's Tina Smith.

Jones, meanwhile, has said it's time to move on.

"From her work on behalf of our veterans and the military - including her recent efforts to help bring the F-35 mission to Montgomery - to her support of Alabama's farmers, Martha Roby is the clear conservative choice for this seat", the statement said.
