The engine will be mated to an eight-speed auto transmission. Optional is parallel and perpendicular parking assist, and adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go and lane-centering capability. A post-collision braking system, created to automatically bring the vehicle to a stop after initial impact, is newly optional.

The Edge ST also will have an available performance brake package that we assume will add six-piston Brembo calipers. Now, the company will launch the 2019 Ford Edge, a hot rod SUV. To our minds the first ST model was the Mondeo ST24 of more than 20 years ago and since then we've had a fairly steady stream of fast (ish) Fords, from the underwhelming (ST170) to the bloody fantastic (outgoing Fiesta). It also provides sharper engine braking, and a more "resonant" exhaust tone.

All-new Edge ST vehicle will be fully revealed at the Detroit Motor Show. The Edge also has available post-collision braking, which Ford said automatically applies moderate brake pressure in the event of a collision to avoid further injury, damage to the vehicle or a second collision.

Dimensionally, the interior is unchanged, as are the materials. "That's a really important demographic for us to continue to reach". He declined to say when Ford planned to make automatic emergency brakes standard on all its USA models. Not anymore, though, as now there's a 2019 Edge ST in town. Rather, it was built to satisfy the performance-hungry crossover buyer who wants access to impressive performance every day of the week, rain or shine, whether commuting to work or taking the family on vacation. "This vehicle is going to deliver in spades in both of those aspects", Aquino said.

A new front and rear end will differentiate the 2019 Edge from previous models with help from sleek new headlights, a new hood, and a freshly sculpted front fascia.

The move toward ST could signal a sea change for Ford Performance.

"We shredded a lot of race tracks with this vehicle", Jonathan Crocker, the Edge's chief engineer, told reporters ahead of the reveal. The development team also aimed for improved handling with a retuned suspension and larger brakes that can scrub speed off in a hurry. Ford sold over 142,000 Edges in 2017, with Edge Sports accounting for about 10 percent of that total.

"There hasn't been any softening of the market as it relates to the Edge and this is just about keeping it at the forefront of people's preferences", Dias said in an interview Thursday. The automaker sold 142,600 Edges past year, a 6 percent gain at time when overall auto sales slipped 2 percent.
