Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, the gaming division of the movie and TV giant, has announced the formation of a new Harry Potter games label called Portkey Games. Will another wide-appeal franchise once again test Niantic's limits or has the game maker learned from its failures?
Regardless of what the game ends up being, if it has the same charm and addictive nature of Pokémon Go, we're looking at another big hit here.
"At Niantic, our goal is to leverage technology to create real world experiences that help people to discover the wonderful, and often magical parts of the world around them". Stay tuned, the game is expected to debut sometime next year.
A similar AR-based magical game, called Maguss, has already been made, and is now in early alpha.
Pokémon Go swept the nation in 2016.
There's pretty much no detail to the announcement, which simply states Niantic's intention to release the game. It sounds like the Harry Potter game might have something similar.
The result? The game might incorporate real-world locations into the in-game experience. And that's really all we know, but I'm guessing your imagination will lead you to the potential here. Niantic encourages Potter fans to follow their social channels to get more updates.
