A number of local organizations are holding Thanksgiving dinners this year. "They sign up at church that they will roast one or two turkeys".
Pretty Rick said he's had a tough couple of years and sometimes had to go without lunch or dinner. For the fourth year in a row, 375 volunteers will give back in the form of helping set up, washing dishes and donating food. Volunteers and members of the church help to cook and prepare the meals.
"The first year, we had somewhere in the area of 60 people", she said, "which is really more than we thought".
Each person who came today left with a gift bag that included things like toiletries, hats, and scarves.
"Generally we try to make everything at home if we can", Howard said.
∫ Salem's annual Thanksgiving dinner will be held from 11 a.m.to 2 p.m. Thursday at the Memorial Building, 785 E. State St. Carryouts are available. Volunteers are offering rides to and from dinner.
New Creation Community Church is opening up its new location to the community Thursday for a free Thanksgiving meal.
People wanting to help can drop off prepared side dishes or ham on Tuesday from 1 p.m.to 6 p.m. and Wednesday from 9 a.m.to 3 p.m. "We may run out of peas, but we will serve as long as food is available".
Last year, Gather served more than 700 meals with 30 volunteers working all day Thursday and part of the day Wednesday.
It will include turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, corn, applesauce and pumpkin pie.
Following the dinner, free haircuts will be offered and nurses will be on duty to assist with family practice and OBGYN services.
