He said that as the terrorists entered the BSF camp's administrative block, they were immediately surrounded by the security forces and thereafter a fierce encounter followed. The terrorists were members of 11-member "Afzal Guru Squad" of Jaishe-Mohammad.

Flight operations resumed at the high-security airport after being suspended briefly, with at least one in-bound flight from New Delhi cancelled, authorities said.

Piecing together the chain of events, police said terrorists entered the BSF's 182 Battalion headquarters through a damaged perimeter wall and started firing in all directions.

"We think that the fidayeen were targeting the weapons of the quarter guard but an alert quarter guard detected the terrorists and he challenged them", he said.

Adjacent to the camp is the old Srinagar airfield, which is been run by the Indian Air force.

Kanwal also added that even though sentries are stationed at such camps and patrolling takes place, there is always room for militants to sneak into the camps.

Two terrorists have been killed in the ongoing gunfight while three BSF personnel have sustained injuries. "But the state government said no, saying they can deal with it on their own", said a senior government official in the security establishment. Khan termed the operation as a paragon example of coordination among security forces. The lack of security arrangements outside the airport has also ensured that only a limited number of 52 flights operate in the day at the worldwide airport. An Assistant Sub-Inspector was also killed while four security personnel including a policeman were wounded injured in the attack.

Indian officials said three Indian soldiers and a police officer were wounded while two of the militants had been killed so far. IGP Kashmir Muneer Khan said there is no information yet about these fidayeen getting any help from locals.

On 26th of August, fidayeen militants stormed the District Police Lines in south Kashmir's Pulwama district. "The operation ended at 1 pm", he told the media.
