"Mayor Murray will vigorously fight these allegations in court".

On Tuesday, The Seattle Times then published a story of Murray's younger cousin, Joseph Dyer, who claimed that the Mayor abused him repeatedly in the 70's when he was a teenager.

Before being chosen leader in 2013, Murray was a long-lasting Democrat state administrator who drove the crusade to sanction same-sex marriage in Washington state.

"I think it is the right thing to do", Nickels said of Murray's resignation.

The molestation stopped, Dyer said, when a boy in a Catholic group home where Murray worked accused him of abuse. As mayor, he pushed into law one of the nation's first big-city, $15-an-hour minimum-wage laws. Murray did not plan to seek re-election for another term.

City Council member Bruce Harrell will become interim mayor and will decide within five days whether to serve the remainder of Murray's term, the Times reports.

As a effect of Murray's resignation, whoever wins the Seattle mayoral contest (almost certainly either Jenny Durkan or Cary Moon) will become the city's next leader as of the certification of the November 2017 general election in late November... a month prior to when Murray's term was set to end.

Murray, 62, confirmed that he did share a room with Dyer in the '70's. She removed his name from her campaign website Tuesday afternoon.

Councilmember Kshama Sawant blasted her colleagues for failing to push Murray out.

Politician and mayoral candidate, Jenny Durkan, endorsed Murray's decision to resign from his position, while questioning his background.

"I don't know what to believe".

The previous allegations came from people who could be dismissed as troubled.

Murray denies the claims, but said that he was afraid the claims could impact city business.

Sottile also told the Times that she was "very glad to hear that he's resigned", adding that she hopes it will help others. We pin our hopes on our leaders and one of the most hard stigmas and stereotypes that held us back is being reinforced today. He attributed the latest claims to bad blood between two estranged wings of the family.

A recent investigation, however, revealed that in the 1980's, a child protection inspector alerted that Murray had abused his adoptive son, but the file was closed. "It's just on his time".
