NY Responders Head To Florida, Virgin Islands

Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb has authorized members of the Indiana National Guard to head for Florida to help in recovery efforts after Hurricane Irma passes over the sunshine state.

While relief efforts are still underway in Texas, the Oklahoma National Guard is keeping a close eye on Hurricane Irma as well.

And Scott is also calling on the public to help. "For New York City in general, we've experienced a lot of really bad situations, most notably of course 9/11", said Doug Bainton of the FDNY Disaster Assistance Response team. "As we continue to pray for those affected by these weather events, we want each of them to know that the Guardsmen of CT supporting these relief efforts will remain on duty until the job is done", Major General Thaddeus J. Martin said in a statement on Sunday.

One hundred Air Guard members of the 129th Rescue Wing arrived on the east coast of Florida.

- The Army has more than 140 aircraft, 650 trucks, 150 boats prepared; and additional resources as necessary - particularly trucks - on standby to support response efforts if called upon.

Republican Ohio Gov. John Kasich provided verbal approval for the deployment Saturday morning after receiving a request from the National Guard Bureau in Washington, D.C.

The U.S. Coast Guard has now closed most major cruise ports in Florida ready for the oncoming Hurricane Irma which has already caused major destruction across the Caribbean. The remaining 3,000 members are on traditional Guard duty this weekend. The team will depart at 5 p.m. today, Thursday, September 7 from our Guilderland, NY Special Operations Facility.

NYTF-2 is administered and operated by the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services Office of Fire Prevention and Control.

The unit is outfitted with high wheeled vehicles that are used in search and rescue missions.

Several members of the brigade recently returned from Texas providing aviation logistical support for Hurricane Harvey's response.
