However, a shadow report on SDGs prepared by civil society organisations in India, led by the Wada Na Todo Abhiyan (WNTA), states that India's growth story of the last two decades has accentuated inequalities, perpetuated poverty and limited the choices of historically marginalised communities.

The campaign consists of a series of installations and initiatives that started in November 2016 and will build up over the course of 2017 to help inform and mobilise the maximum number of people around the goals.

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), agreed by the UN membership in 2015, address the root causes of poverty and the universal need for development that works for all people by 2030.

She added that there could be underreporting, given the challenge of available, accurate, timely and verifiable data in some countries in Africa and across the developing world.

In a message to the delegates and participants at the event, SGI President Daisaku Ikeda said one of the noteworthy aspects of the SDGs is that they are backed by a vision and determination to leave no one behind. Nigeria kick-started implementation of the SDGs in early 2016 at a time when the country faced the duality of an economic recession and a humanitarian crisis occasioned by the Boko Haram insurgency in the North East and the unfortunate tide of militancy in the Niger Delta region.

It may be recalled that the NVR is purely voluntary. Although the SDGs do not have goals and indicators specifically focusing on consumer rights, all the goals are in some way or the other related to protecting consumer rights. While all four countries have made significant strides, through this project, towards monitoring their progress, this experience highlighted the need for statistical capacity building in order for the SDGs to be a success within small island economies.

Trade can be connected to policies that ensure alignment to the 2030 Agenda.
