Trump said on Twitter on Tuesday he appreciated efforts by Chinese President Xi Jinping "to help with North Korea", adding "It has not worked out".

North Korea capital Pyongyang's official newspaper Rodong Sinmun called US President Donald Trump a "psychopath" in an editorial.

"We have a great relationship with China and I really like President Xi", Trump said as he stood beside Branstad at an Iowa community college.

For months, the Trump administration has lobbied China to exert its economic influence over the North Korean government in an effort to halt that country's nuclear weapons and missile development activities.

The Trump administration is considering banning travel by US citizens to North Korea, officials said Tuesday, and Trump declared Warmbier's treatment a "total disgrace".

There are lots of reasons why the Europeans wouldn't want to go that route, not the least of which is that a secret-stealing, export-promoting, rule-of-law-despising China isn't the greatest partner for the EU.

The family of Otto Warmbier has asked that no autopsy be performed on the body of the United States student who died days after being evacuated in a coma from North Korean detention.

North Korea last tested a nuclear bomb in September, but it has conducted repeated missile test since and vowed to develop a nuclear-tipped missile capable of hitting the USA mainland, putting it at the forefront of Trump's security worries.

He also tweeted that "the USA once again condemns the brutality of the North Korean regime as we mourn its latest victim". Tillerson and Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis hosted Chinese State Councilor Yang Jiechi and Gen. Fang Fenghui, chief of the People's Liberation Army's Joint Staff. China has pressured South Korean businesses via boycotts and bans, such as ending Chinese group tours to South Korea and closing most of South Korean conglomerate Lotte Group's Lotte Mart 023530.KS retail stores in China.

North Korea's government said it released Warmbier last week on "humanitarian grounds".

North Korea's treatment of an American student who died after being released from detention in a coma was inhumane and U.S. patience with Pyongyang is running out, Pentagon chief James Mattis said Wednesday. "I would like to do this.' So, we agreed to let him do that", Fred Warmbier said.

The US opposes changes to the status quo through the militarization of outposts and "excessive maritime claims unsupported by global law", Tillerson said, adding that Washington was committed to freedom of navigation and overflight.

Ohio's Republican U.S. senator says he had a secret meeting in December with North Korean officials to urge that they release a college student from his Cincinnati home area.

The State Department also said the June 21 talks covered issues such as counterterrorism and territorial rivalries in the South China Sea.

But the comment could just as easily weaken Trump's hand with the Chinese, laying the American position bare and making it clear that the United States is prepared to deal with North Korea alone.
