How much longer the sides would stay together was a question entering the 2017 season, as Edelman was scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent after the year.

Edelman and the Patriots have agreed to a contract extension, according to multiple reports. Plenty of outlets close to the Patriots had been asking similar questions over the last few months.

Edelman, 31, is coming off a career-best season that saw him put up 98 receptions for 1,106 yards.

He is heading into the final season of a 4-year, $17 million contract.

The Patriots and Julian Edelman are "moving toward" a contract extension that is expected to be completed "in the next day or so", NFL Media's Mike Garafolo reported Thursday, citing sources.

Originally selected by the Patriots in the seventh round of the 2009 NFL Draft out of Kent State, he has since remained in New England for the past eight seasons. No game could have been more important though than Super Bowl 51 where Edelman was a vital part in engineering one of the greatest comebacks ever. In his eight-year National Football League career to date, Edelman has 425 receptions for 4,540 yards and 24 touchdowns.
