There was a shock in the last eight at the 2017 Mercedes Open as No. 3 seed Tomas Berdych was defeated by Spaniard Feliciano Lopez in Stuttgart, Germany.

Berdych, who has reached only one final this year, joins already eliminated top seeds Roger Federer and Grigor Dimitrov on the sidelines.

The 33rd-ranked Lopez awaits his semi-final opponent as Federer's conqueror Tommy Haas faces fellow German and sixth seed Mischa Zverev.

The Spaniard is set to play next against the victor of the match between Germans Tommy Haas and sixth-seeded Mischa Zverev.

Lopez, 35, staged a fighting comeback after losing the opening set in a tiebreaker and eventually prevailed to take his season record to 12-12.

In a duel that lasted just over two hours, Lopez, World No.33, defeated Berdych 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-4, reports Efe.
