In his first substantive comments about the appointment of a special counsel to probe Russian interference in the 2016 US elections, President Donald Trump denied that his campaign had been involved in any collusion with Moscow, as he declared that the probe "divides the country".
"I want to still have a voice", he said of whether he would stay involved in politics. "I am healthy. I am confident I would continue to be re-elected by large margins". "You can't really finalize things until you actually leave". His campaign registered the Web domains JasonChaffetz2028.com and Jason2028.com in early April.
Check out this story on USATODAY.com: https://usat.ly/2qxXaY4 Rep. Jason Chaffetz has already said he won't run for re-election, but now he might be leaving office more than a year before his term is over.
According to a memo whose existence and content was first reported on by The New York Times on Tuesday and later confirmed to ABC by sources close to Comey, the former FBI director was asked in March by President Trump to drop the bureau's investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn. Chaffetz later said that the negative reception was the result of "paid protesters".
Chaffetz also expressed skepticism about the memos detailed by The Times.
He also showed the shallowness of certain convictions, turning on a dime by first announcing, "I can no longer in good conscience endorse this person for president" when the tape of Donald Trump bragging about sexual assault emerged, then declaring only 19 days later that he would, in fact, vote for Trump. "I've been disappointed in the Trump administration because they have not loosened up the documents in the State Department and Justice Department".
Rep. Elijah Cummings, the top Democrat on the panel, has repeatedly clashed with Chaffetz during several investigations, but told CNN that he was "going to miss him" and that he brought a "breath of fresh air" to the committee after it went through some tumultuous times under prior Republican leadership.
"I think there will be lots of different Republicans who will step up", Chaffetz said.
Chaffetz, 50, did not hint at future career plans in a letter addressed to constituents, only that his decision was based on family considerations. Herbert scheduled a November 7 special election, along with an August 15 primary election, where candidates who gather signatures to get on the ballot will compete against candidates nominated by political parties at their conventions.
