FBI Seeking Information on Congressional Baseball Shooter

Hodgkinson, who posted a slew of anti-Republican and anti-Trump posts on social media over the years, opened fire at the baseball practice in Alexandra, Va., injuring House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) and three others.

The gunman who shot a top GOP congressman and several other people Wednesday at a baseball practice outside the nation's capital had a long history of lashing out at Republicans and once frightened a neighbor by firing a rifle into a field behind his IL house.

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise remains in critical condition after being shot in the hip as his Republican team practiced for tonight's Congressional Baseball Game, a time-honored tradition created to promote comity and unity in the Capitol. She said her husband, 66-year-old James Hodgkinson, told her he was going to Washington because he wanted to work on tax policy.

She, like others who knew "Tom" Hodgkinson, as she referred to him, never dreamed his problems would lead to a potentially deadly attack. "I can't wrap my head around it, okay?"

Sue Hodgkinson said she was informed of her husband's involvement when a reporter from ABC news called just hours after the attack.

But she maintained there was nothing she could have done about it. Critics say the pages offer a snapshot into the frightening hate that has pervaded politics since Trump's contentious election win last November.

However, the truth was that, while Hodgkinson may have been jobless and living out of his gym bag when in Virginia, he had actually owned a home inspection business, which he dissolved before heading to D.C.

Watson said the deputy on Wednesday recalled Hodgkinson as being "very cordial". Crystal Griner, one of the Capitol Police officers, was hit in the ankle and is in good condition at MedStar Washington.

The roads surrounding the Alexandria baseball field where the shooting took place remain closed as the Federal Bureau of Investigation continues to search the area for any new clues, reports CBS News correspondent Chip Reid. He's had a second surgery and will be in the hospital a while. "I can not believe it", she said. Zack Barth, a congressional aide, was shot in the calf, treated and released from a hospital.

SHAPIRO: What have you heard in Belleville from people who knew Hodgkinson? And he was just as politically active online as he was in person.

"I'm sorry that he did this, but there's nothing I can do about it", she said.

The FBI said the shooter's white van has been processed.
